Storm Damage and Mail-In Voting: Answers for Lake County Voters
The Lake County Board of Elections and Registration (LCBER) has been receiving a very high number of questions about how storm damage and mail-in voting affect the Tuesday, November 3, 2026 general election. The short answer: the vote goes on.
Displaced by the storm? If you plan to return home once repairs are complete, keep your current registration and vote at your assigned polling place, or at any of the eleven Early Voting sites starting October 6.
ID address doesn't match? The address on your photo ID does not matter. Poll workers only check your name, your photo, the expiration date, and that it was issued by the U.S. or the State of Indiana.
Power outage on Election Day? LCBER's emergency plan includes back-up generators, independent Wi-Fi, secure back-up ballot processing, and emergency paper ballots.
Polling place damaged? All current Early Voting and Election Day locations remain the same. Any change will be announced, and affected voters will receive a postcard.
Mail-in voting is still happening. Ballots begin mailing September 19. Signed applications must reach LCBER by 11:59 PM on October 22. Completed ballots must be received by 6:00 PM on November 3, or you can return yours in person at the LCBER office or any Early Voting site.
